So, I’m sick. I have been since thursday, and the little bugger seems to have no intention of leaving (Man, and I thought watching Andromeda Strain would scare it out, not encourage it). Thus, I have been lying on my ass watching movies nonstop all day long. You know what I’ve realized? Wait, no, pause. I realized this a long time ago, I just didn’t feel like saying it because my generation seems to feel wholeheartedly opposite of me, but I have decided that if I don’t announce it I will lose my sanity.
The comedy that is being produced to cater to my generation SUCKS. It’s degrading, not just to our intelligence, but to our view of women and the relationships between the two sexes, and to the moral and intellectual fiber of pretty much every single teenager stereotyped in those movies. I have, in the past week, watched quite a few teen movies, but the one that sticks most prominantly in my mind is the one that I was looking forward the most to seeing due to the rave reviews my friends and peers had given it; Superbad. I didn’t laugh one single time while watching that movie. Not once. It was honestly the most immature, degrading, and depressing piece of work I have ever seen. I am very well aware that some teenager act like that, as I am also aware that there are sleazy old men who go to strip joint after spending the day leering at preteen girls at the supermarket. However, I must say with strong feeling that just because these people exist does not, and I repeat, does NOT mean that we should glorify them! I am so SICK of the over-sexualization of my generation (and yes, I am aware that we aren’t the first, and also that I am not in the least bit innocent). Sex and drugs have become so commonplace that I can not honestly think of one single facet of my life not affected strongly by them. And no, I’m not one of those “Abstainance until Marriage” people, but I do believe some things simply should not be so amazingly trivialized. The fact that movies like American Pie and Superbad are so overwhelmingly popular sickens me.
You know what? Let me back up. I’m being 100% unfair to the movie industry. They’re just representing society. Teens binge drinking, casually hooking up, and using large amounts of drugs is way more commonplace than the skeezeball man I mentioned earlier. In fact, I’m pretty sure I only know maybe 5 non-drug using virgins, and I hang with a fairly clean crowd. It’s just, I’m outraged that my generation is OK with that! I knew a girl who by the time she was in 10th grade had been with over a dozen guys, tried out more drugs than i can probably name, and got drunk regularly. She was, admittedly, mocked by her fellow students some, but very few tried to do anything about it. Almost everyone I know has gotten absolutely ’shit-faced’ drunk in the past year, I can’t count the number of times I’ve had people tell me I should, or ask me if i want to do drugs with them, and the amount of grossly perverted lines that have been thrown my way so casually as if they were just bland remarks about the weather would fill two harlequin romance book stores. What is so overwhelmingly wrong with my generation that we have to turn to sex, drugs, and alcohol on a regular basis? Why in this wide world is it acceptable for an AP student to use the line “God, I really need to get drunk” so casually?
I may regret posting this, as I am rather intoxicated on cough meds and decongestant, and my fever is probably getting to me, but it’s how I honestly feel.
